Recent Storms That Damaged Roofs in Northwest Houston
Storm damage claims in Houston are tied to specific dates. Your carrier will ask which event caused the damage, and your policy sets a deadline for reporting it. These are the events still generating claims in the areas we serve.
- July 8, 2024 · Hurricane Beryl (most recent) · Greater Houston, Cypress, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands. Made landfall near Matagorda as a Category 1 and tracked across the Houston metro with hurricane-force gusts, leaving most of the area without power for days. Sustained wind lifted and creased shingles on the windward slopes of thousands of homes, and falling limbs punched through decking under the pine and oak canopy in Spring and The Woodlands. Much of the damage was not visible from the ground.
- May 28, 2024 · May 28 hailstorm · Cypress, Katy, Northwest Houston. A second round of severe storms twelve days after the derecho dropped quarter- to golf-ball-sized hail across Cy-Fair and West Houston. Hail bruising on asphalt shingles: soft spots where granules were knocked loose and the mat fractured. Bruised shingles usually leak a year or two later, which is why claims from this storm were still being filed the following spring.
- May 16, 2024 · May 16 derecho · Greater Houston, Cypress, Katy, Spring, The Woodlands. A derecho crossed the metro with gusts near 100 mph, blew out windows downtown, and caused more than a billion dollars in damage region-wide. Straight-line wind that lifted shingle tabs, tore off ridge caps and stripped whole slopes on the exposed west- and north-facing sides of homes in Katy and Cypress.
If your roof went through any of these and has not been inspected since, the inspection is free and takes about an hour. We photograph every slope, and if there is nothing wrong we say so. Most policies expect a claim to be reported within a set window of the storm, so the sooner it is looked at, the more options you keep.
What Hail Damage Looks Like on a Shingle Roof
Hail rarely leaves holes. On an asphalt shingle roof it leaves bruises: round spots where the granules were knocked off and the fiberglass mat underneath was fractured. From the ground they look like nothing. On the roof they feel soft under a thumb and show up as dark circles where the black mat is exposed. The shingle keeps water out for a while, then the bruise opens up under Houston sun and the leak shows up one or two summers later.
The easy tells are on the metal: dents in gutters, downspouts, vent caps and the soft aluminum of a roof turbine. Adjusters look at those first, and so do we. If the metal is dented, the shingles took the same hits.
Wind damage is different. It creases shingle tabs where they folded back, breaks the seal strip so tabs lift in the next storm, and strips ridge caps. Creased shingles do not reseal and are a covered loss on most policies even when the roof still looks intact.
The First 48 Hours After a Storm
- Photograph everything from the ground. Debris in the yard, dented gutters, shingles on the lawn, any interior stains. Dated photos are the start of the claim file.
- Do not go on the roof. Wet shingles and hidden decking damage put people in the hospital every storm season. Call us; the inspection is free and we carry the ladder.
- Tarp active leaks. We provide emergency tarping. Your policy covers reasonable steps to prevent further damage, so keep the receipt.
- Get the inspection before you call the carrier. Filing with a documented scope in hand gets a fuller settlement than filing blind and hoping the adjuster finds everything.
- Be wary of the door-knockers. Out-of-town crews follow storms into Cypress and Katy every year. Texas law prohibits any contractor from paying or waiving your deductible; anyone offering to is telling you how they operate.

FAQS
Common questions after hail or wind damage to a Houston-area roof.
How do I know if my roof has hail damage?
From the ground, check the metal first: dents in gutters, downspouts, vent caps and turbines mean the shingles took the same hits. On the roof, hail leaves round soft bruises where granules are gone and the mat underneath is fractured. Those rarely leak right away, which is why a free inspection after a hailstorm is worth doing even if the ceiling is dry.
How long do I have to file a roof claim after a storm in Texas?
It depends on your policy, and the window is shorter than most people expect. Many Texas homeowner policies require the claim to be reported promptly and set a one-year limit for storm losses. Check the notice section of your policy, and get the roof inspected as soon as you can so the file is dated close to the event.
Should I file a claim or just pay for the repair?
If the damage is isolated and costs less than your deductible, paying out of pocket is usually the better call, and we will tell you so after the inspection. If a whole slope or the full roof is affected, a claim is the right route. We give you the documented scope either way so the decision is yours.
Will you tarp my roof before the claim is approved?
Yes. Emergency tarping stops further damage, and your policy covers reasonable steps to prevent it. Keep the receipt; it goes on the claim.
A roofer knocked on my door after the storm and offered to cover my deductible. Is that normal?
It is common after every Houston storm, and it is illegal. Texas Insurance Code 707.003 prohibits contractors from paying, waiving or rebating any part of a deductible, and carriers can deny a claim over it. We meet your adjuster, document the damage, and do the work at the approved scope. The deductible is yours.
